The second book from John Martell is a great retro horror/thriller novel set in Buxton and across Cape Hatteras in the 1980s. Steve Brodie is a famous national DJ who wants to escape his stardom by working from the isolation of Cape Hatteras. But he has a secret and terrifying past that haunts him. Unfortunately for him, a more sinister evil haunts the coast, and Steve is the only one who can face it.
Midnight Radio is an exciting read, meant to be both a fun horror novel, written in the genre of the great 80s pulp novels, but also a new take on the basic werewolf and vampire tales that became more popular in recent years. Martell finds lesser known legends of ancient creatures to move away from the usual tropes of vampires. And the book also ties in local legends from Cape Hatteras that aren't as well known, making Midnight Radio a unique and different read than the usual fare. The book reads fast, but offers enough content to be read over a week at the beach while sitting in the sand.
